Sonic 2 Secret Rings Control is a hack of Sonic 2 by MainMemory. It changes the controls to a style similar to Sonic and the Secret Rings, where Sonic moves forward automatically.

Sonic 1: The Special Stages is a hack of Sonic 1 by SonicVaan. This hack removes standard Sonic gameplay and replaces it with the Special Stages which normally were only accessible by the Giant Rings at the end of each stage.

The actual special stage layouts have been touched for every stage.

This hack is actually on hold. Future releases are not to be expected.

Sonic 1: Painto Edition 2 (or simply Sonic: Painto Edition 2) is a modification of Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit), and the first part of the Paintifisation project, made byPainto maniak. The hack contains many features, and is named 'Panto Edition 2' to separate itself from Painto maniak's previous hack; Sonic: Painto Edition (later renamed Sonic: Christmas Island).

Sonic 2 SMTP is a hack of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 made by SMTP. The hack is an ASM/Layout hack with a couple of new features.

Sonic and the Secret Extended Edition (previously known as Sonic 1: The Other Extended Edition, not to be confused with Sonic the Hedgehog Extended Edition) is a hack of Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis by Hayate. It was discontinued in August 2008, after Hayate gave up on the hack due to the various bugs it had, but it was picked up again in December 2009.

Sally Acorn in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (aka Sally in Sonic 2) is a fan-made ROM of the game Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, with Princess Sally Acorn as a playable character in place of Sonic the Hedgehog

The game was modified by Sonic Retro member E-122-Psi, with additional programming and coding by other members including MainMemory, Qiuu and Snkenjoi.

Sonic the Hedgehog Revelation (or Sonic Revelation) is a hack of Sonic 1 by Animemaster. This hack has many features and will continue to increase them, while the product is under way. It also plans a new zone, made of instruments known as music land. Although the creator hasn't decided on whether the art would be good enough yet. The hack contains the three hedgehogs Sonic, Shadow, Silver as they join to face Eggman once again.

Sonic 2 Revamped was a heavy modification of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 created by Irixion. This mod first started out as a layout hack, a test of skill, and what Irixion could do. At the time, it didn't have a name, but after seeking for someone who could help, Tweaker suggested the name Sonic 2: Revamped, and it stuck ever since. It eventually grew into a few close friends helping out, and the project grew into realizing Irixion's vision of the perfect game. After major setbacks and a core crippling incident, the hack was ultimately scrapped.

Red Hot Sonic 2 is a hack of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (16-bit) by redhotsonic. It was his first hack.

Started in early 2004, this hack featured two fan characters: Red Hot Sonic and Jet Pack Tails. Several versions were released (0.50, 0.60, 0.70, 0.80, and then finally 0.90). The hack started off bad (especially the palettes) but became more developed over time.

Ray the Flying Squirrel in Sonic the Hedgehog is a fan-made ROM of the game Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, featuring the character Ray the Flying Squirrel in place of Sonic the Hedgehog, the game's usual protagonist. The creator of the hack is Fabricechaotix.

Ray the Flying Squirrel has a air glide move similar to Knuckles but the air glide does no damage when touching enemies. The air glide also does not stop when touching walls. Unlike many Sonic 1 hacks there is no spin dash move.

Sonic the Hedgehog Plus (often called Sonic 1 Plus) is a hack of Sonic the Hedgehog by Hivebrain. The hack is basically the same as the original game, except with a number of extra features and bugfixes.

Sonic in Paynt is a parody hack of Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis by sebmal (credited as "thehulk" in the hack as a semi-successful attempt at trolling Sonic Cult). In an attempt to make the worst hack possible, uncoordinated palettes and clashing music and were utilized.

This hack is similar to the tongue-in-cheek hack Sonic 1337 by Ultima.

There's also a sequel, Sonic and Tals in Paynt. It's even worse.

sonic and tals in paynt is a parody hack of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (and sequel to Sonic in Paynt) for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis by sebmal (credited as "thehulk" in the hack.) In this sequel that is most likely wanted by nobody, you can expect even worse palettes, a soundtrack consisting entirely of the Hidden Palace Zone music, and poorly edited level layouts.

This hack is similar to the tongue-in-cheek hack Sonic 1337 by Ultima.

Pana Der Hejhog is a hack of Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis by MarkeyJester. It features one new level, 'Mystic Island Zone' and a purple hedgehog that resembles Sonic, 'Pana'. It is notable for having extremely detailed graphics and fluid animation.

OMG THE RED RINGS is a hack of Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit) for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis by Fiz. In this hack, all the rings and monitors are replaced by bouncing red rings. Touch one of them and you get killed. According to many people who posted in the original release thread, this hack is extremely hard, and it is probably impossible to beat several of its acts. However, it was received very well by the general audience, including several renowned members; this granted Tech Membership to Fiz (she's now an Oldbie).

Not-so-Super Sonic 2 is a hack of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 by MainMemory. It was first posted in the Random Hack/Mini Project thread, where nobody paid any attention to it. MainMemory said himself that updates would be unlikely, but has changed his mind.

Sonic 3D: No Flickies is a hack of Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island made by Sik. The game remains mostly unchanged; however, the Flicky collection system (part of the core gameplay of the original game) has been removed, allowing the player to complete the levels without needing to collect all the flickies in the level to advance. This makes it much more similar to traditional Sonic games, where the goal is to simply make it to the end of the level without dying.

This hack was later built upon further in the hack, Super Sonic in Sonic 3D, which was also created by Sik.

Mr. Needlemouse is a hack of the original Sonic the Hedgehog game for the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis, by MKAmeX. It replaces Sonic the Hedgehog with one version (arguably the strangest) of his designer Naoto Ohshima's early prototype of the character, Mr. Needlemouse. Planned features include a complete overhaul of the game's graphics to resemble early concept art, and perhaps new music.

Motobug the Badnik in Sonic the Hedgehog (aka Motobug in Sonic 1) is a hack of Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Mega Drive, by Polygon Jim. As its title suggests, in this hack the main character Sonic the Hedgehog is replaced by Motobug, one of Dr. Robotnik's badniks.

So far, some of Sonic's main sprites and animations have been replaced by those of Motobug, Motobug's speed has been decreased (except when powered-up by aSpeed Shoes monitor, which are more numerous), and the sprites of Roller badniks in Spring Yard Zone have been replaced by those of Sonic (referencing a common interpretation by fans that Roller is a robotic impersonation of Sonic, something that officially appeared in later games in the form of Metal Sonic and various others).

Of the first release, Polygon Jim stated that he had only tested and confirmed Green Hill Zone (Acts 1-3) for completability. However, upon testing, Katelynn andRGamer2009 reported that other Acts are completable, including:
