From the main menu, first head to the Options menu and enter the following button combination: UP, DOWN, C, DOWN, B, B, B, UP, C. Now press START to return to the main menu. Next enter the Sound Test menu, then press START again to return to the main menu. Finally, enter the Options menu once more and you'll see a new option that allows you to adjust the number of starting credits.
 
Unlimited Continues (1 player)
For this code, you need two controllers hooked up to the console. Start a one player game using the first controller. When near death, hit start on the second controller to get a fresh set of lives. Repeat this and switch back over to the first once that one runs low, etc.
